Watermelon

Lip-sync practice for performers

From ‘watermelon’ to word perfect.

When performers lose the words mid-number, they're taught to mouth “watermelon” and keep going. From the back of the room it looks like singing. This app is so you never have to.

Launching now · Android — formerly Lyric Lab. Same app, new name.

If you perform to a track, you know this part

Nobody drops a verse in rehearsal.

It happens on the night, in front of people, on the one line you were sure of. Reading the lyrics a few more times is not practice. It is rereading, and it feels like progress right up until it doesn't.

Bring your own track

Any audio file on your phone, or the music already on it. The track you perform to is usually not the one on a streaming service.

The words light up as they land

Time-synced lyrics are found for you, so the line you are on is the line that is lit. No scrolling a text file with one hand.

Loop the part that keeps escaping

Mark the section that keeps getting away from you and run it, and only it, until it stops getting away from you.

Slow it down without it going seasick

Pitch-corrected, so the track at three-quarter speed still sounds like the song rather than a tape dragging. Then bring it back to tempo.

Hide the words back, a few at a time

The lyrics come away in stages, with first letters left as a foothold, until you are carrying it yourself. Test mode tells you whether you really have it.

Works with no signal

Once a song is in, its track and its words are on the phone. Dressing rooms are famously concrete boxes, and that is exactly where you need this.

What it costs

We sell the practice, not the words.

Adding a song is free. Its lyrics are free. Karaoke, the words in time with the song, is free for good. The learning tools cost one credit per song: hiding words, looping a section, slowing it down, and the test.

A credit unlocks that song permanently. No subscription, no clock running down, and you start with three.

  • Karaoke: free
  • 3 credits to start
  • 1 credit = 1 song, for good
