Butterscotch

A USB stick and a small player for any TV

For older viewers who want their own TV back, and the families who set it up

Television from their own lifetime, on a stick. Plug it in and the TV shows three things: pick up where you left off, one suggestion for what to watch next, and a way to find a show.

What it is

A Butterscotch stick carries one person's television: the shows of their generation, their favorites, the memories attached to them, and a player that shows nothing else. For a ninety-year-old who wants to watch Gunsmoke the way she did with her late husband, the home screen is three things. Pick up where you left off, in one press. Watch next, exactly one suggestion, with a reason: “You and Harold loved Gunsmoke.” And find a show, where saying “Gosmoke” gets you “Did you mean Gunsmoke?”, or she can browse by picture or pick letters. The family sets it up once from a computer, which writes and signs the stick. Plugging the stick into the player behind the TV turns the TV on. The catalog covers more than a hundred classic series from 1947 to 2010, and the watch history travels with the stick, not with the TV.

  • Three choices, not three hundred
  • Forgiving voice search
  • Plug in and it turns on
The Butterscotch TV home screen. It says Good morning, Margaret. Under Watch next is one show, Gunsmoke from 1955, with the reason You and Harold loved Gunsmoke and the words Press OK to watch. Beside it is a large button, Find a show.
The real TV screen, running on the demo stick. Margaret and Harold are the demo's people, not customers.

Have someone in mind?

If there's someone you'd set one up for, we want to hear about them. And if you hold the rights to classic TV, you're the missing piece. The partner interface is already built.
